Kathlyn MacLean met and married Virginia-born Dr. Ira Owen Beaty in 1931 in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada. The couple tied the knot in a beautiful wedding ceremony in the presence of their friends, families, and loved ones. They were both teachers at the time they tied the knot. Kathlyn taught drama in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, and her husband, a teacher and school administrator, in addition to working in real estate.

Three years after they got married, Kathlyn Corinne MacLean and her husband Ira Owen had their first bundle of joy- Shirley- on April 24, 1934. A few years later they welcomed their second child- Warren on March 30, 1937. The couple raised their children as Baptists. The family moved around a lot.

When their children were still young, the family moved from Richmond where the children were born to Norfolk and then to Arlington and Waverly, then back to Arlington, eventually taking a position at Arlington’s Thomas Jefferson Junior High School in 1945. During the 1950s the family resided in the Dominion Hills section of Arlington.

Kathlyn Corinne MacLean’s son became interested in movies as a child, often accompanying his elder sister to theaters. One film that had an important early influence on him was The Philadelphia Story (1940), which he saw when it was re-released in the 1950s. He noticed a strong resemblance between its star, Katharine Hepburn, and his mother, in both appearance and personality, saying that they symbolized “perpetual integrity”.

Warren Beaty was encouraged to go into acting by the success of his sister. Shirley made her film debut in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Trouble with Harry (1955), for which she won the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year – Actress.
